App icons in 2026: what Xcode still needs for iPhone, Mac and Apple Watch
One 1024-pixel image for iPhone, a full set for Mac, dark, tinted and clear looks, and Icon Composer: a practical guide to Apple app icons in 2026.
Few things in app development are as tedious as icons. Every platform wants its own sizes, shapes and variants, and the rules have changed several times in the last few years. Here is where things stand in 2026 for Apple platforms — and what you can stop doing.
iPhone and iPad: one 1024-pixel image
Since Xcode 14, an iOS app can ship a single 1024 × 1024 px icon. Choose Single Size in the asset catalog and Xcode generates every smaller size for the Home Screen, Spotlight, Settings and notifications. The same image is used on the App Store.
Two rules still apply:
- the iOS icon must be a square image without transparency — the system applies the rounded mask itself;
- design for the smallest size it will appear at: thin lines and small text disappear long before you notice them at 1024 px.
Dark, tinted and clear appearances
With iOS 18, Home Screen icons gained dark and tinted variants, and with the Liquid Glass design of iOS 26 Apple introduced Icon Composer — an app for building layered icons that the system renders in the default, dark, clear and tinted looks. If you provide only a flat image, the system derives the other appearances on its own, and the result is not always pretty. A separate dark variant with a transparent background, and a simple grayscale version for tinting, keep the icon recognizable in every mode.
Mac: still a full set
Mac icons in an asset catalog are still usually supplied as a complete set: 16, 32, 128, 256 and 512 points at 1x and 2x — ten images from 16 × 16 to 1024 × 1024 px. Small sizes appear in Finder lists and menus, large ones in the Dock and on the App Store, so it pays to simplify details for the smallest images rather than downscale the big one.
Apple Watch, iMessage and CarPlay
- Apple Watch also accepts a single 1024 × 1024 px image; the system crops it to a circle, so keep important elements away from the corners.
- iMessage apps and sticker packs use their own wider, 4:3 icon sets.
- CarPlay has its own sizes for the car's display.
| Platform | What Xcode expects | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone and iPad | One 1024 × 1024 px image | No transparency; dark and tinted variants recommended |
| Mac | 10 images, 16–1024 px | Simplify details at small sizes |
| Apple Watch | One 1024 × 1024 px image | Cropped to a circle |
| iMessage, CarPlay | Separate icon sets | Different aspect ratio and sizes |
Common mistakes
- Upscaling a small source image — start from a 1024 px or vector original.
- Leaving transparency in the iOS icon, which App Store Connect rejects.
- Checking the icon only in light mode.
- Copying the iOS icon to the Mac without adapting it to the Mac shape and shadow.
How we handle it
We built AssetsGen because we were tired of doing this by hand for our own apps. You drop in one source image, and it produces the icon sets Xcode expects for iPhone, iPad, CarPlay, iMessage, Apple Watch and Mac — including the newer Mac style — plus image sets for your project. For colors there is ColorsGen, which turns one base color into a palette ready for Xcode.
